Paperless receipts: coming to a store near you

Major retailers nationwide are starting to ditch traditional paper receipts: you know, those scraps of paper that you might scan on your way out of the store before stuffing them into your wallet or purse. According to The New York Times, stores such as like Whole Foods, The Gap, and Old Navy are all planning to offer you your receipt by email rather than printing it out. There has been interest in electronic receipts for years, but only recently have stores started upgrading their systems and collecting the needed email addresses to send you a receipt electronically at check-out.

Easy Little Bread

Right this second I'm eating a slice of butter-slathered homemade bread. And quite frankly, it's the least interesting looking bread you've ever set eyes on. But at this particular moment, there isn't anything on this earth that would taste better. I'm convinced of it. It reminds me of the bread my dad would sometimes bake for us as kids. A dead simple yeast bread recipe made from ingredients I can nearly guarantee you have on hand. My dad's bread was made using all-purpose white flour, whereas this bread is made with a white, wheat, rolled oat blend. I've baked it three times this week, after I came across the recipe for it in a beautiful, heartfelt cookbook by Natalie Oldfield.

Easy Little Bread Recipe

I snapped a few shots of the book to give you a sense of it. Super cute, right? I love the grids of vintage family pictures, and the soft color palette of the recipe pages. Really well done. It's a collection recipes inspired by the notebooks of Dulcie May Booker, written by her granddaughter Natalie. It was published in New Zealand, then Australia and the UK. I stumbled on my copy of it the other day at Omnivore Books here in SF, although I don't think it's been published in the U.S. yet. The recipes are classic and no-fuss. The kind that can and (clearly) have been whipped up a hundred times over - scones, fruit pies, chocolate cake, lemon bars, shortbread, and a selection of savory dishes as well.

Easy Little Bread Recipe

So, to all of you who embraced the soda bread recipe, yet still shy away from yeast-based recipes - you've got to try this one. You can have the dough in the pan in 5-10 minutes. It sits around for 30 minutes while I'm in the shower, then straight into the oven. Thank you Gran & Natalie. It's a beautiful book.

No Bake Chocolate Cake

I don't know about you, but I didn't accomplish much today. I slept in, halfheartedly ran a few errands, accumulated flowers wherever I went, and spent a good amount of time arranging poppies & peonies into a hodgepodge of mason jars and vases. Flowers aside, I dedicated ten minutes making this chocolate cake. It's the ultimate lazy chocolate dessert. And while I think of it as a no bake chocolate cake, you wouldn't be far off if you called it a slice-able truffle. If you have a some dark chocolate, cream, and something to infuse the cream with, you're in business.

No Bake Chocolate Cake

This is the sort of thing I'll throw together if we're having friends over for dinner and I run out of steam on the dessert front. It's less trouble to make than it is to go out and buy something. A small slice goes the distance. It's intense, it's hardcore chocolate, and paired with a touch of whipped cream it's a total crowd-pleaser. I infused the cream used in the cake with espresso and allspice in this version, but you could play it straight, or take it in any direction you're inclined.

No Bake Chocolate Cake

The choice of pan warrants a mention. You end up with with ~ two cups of batter, and for the most part you can pour that into any small-ish, parchment-lined cake pan you like. The parchment is important if you ever want to get the cake out of the pan. For this cake, I used a little loaf pan I like, but I've done this in small spring-form pans, and on occasion little tart pans. Just keep in mind, a bigger pan will mean a thinner slice. A small loaf pan like this yields a deeper slice, and so on. It's hard to screw up - I mean, it's a slice-able truffle cake.

Add This To Your Outdoor Equipment Gear ? Your Life Could Depend On It!

In light of all the disasters that occur in the back country every year, one has to wonder why people don?t take precautions by adding a beacon to their outdoor equipment gear. Don?t let your outdoors fun end in tragedy! This simple device, for instance, is a great help in locating those unfortunate trekkers who have been buried by large avalanches or who are incapacitated in other ways, like finding themselves in personal danger in whiteouts or other horrendous weather conditions. It is called the ACR Microfix 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon and it is instrumental in quickly alerting search and rescue teams to your location via GPS if you are seriously injured. The Microfix GPS transmits your coordinates within 100 meters radius, via the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system, with your registered, unique, digitally coded distress signal, which allows the authorities to identify you by name. It sends two types of signals, a digital (new standard) and an analog signal that is recognized by satellites and aircraft with the SAR Homing Frequency signal. It floats and its battery capacity is for 24 hours continuous use in -20c and 8 hours in -40c. The life span of the battery is 5 years and the whole unit can be stored with no adverse effects for 11 years. It transmits under water and is operational for 10 minutes submersed in 10 meters of water and 1 hour submersed in 5 meters of water. It only weighs 283 g (10 ounces) so it?s no hardship to slip it into your hiking gear backpack. It comes complete with a holster and lanyard, which can be removed for mounting it on a backpack, a belt or a life vest. This little item could save your life. Don?t you think you?re worth it?

Need A New Camping Stove To Include In Your Outdoor Equipment Gear?

I remember, back in November, talking about all the ?soft deep fluffy snow blanketing our mountain trails?. Well, here it is, the 26th of January, and the local mountains are almost bare. I just got back from walking the dog and realized that the grass is very green, there are fat buds on the bushes and tulips are shooting up all over the place? AND? there is next to no snow on the mountains! This isn?t actually very good since we?re hosting the Winter Olympics in a couple of weeks; however, it is affording us an excellent opportunity to get in some early spring camping. So, here we go on our first outdoor camping trip of the year (and decade!). We?ve decided to take two weeks and do a little exploring on some of the local hills (away from the Olympic venues). We?re going to set up a base camp and do a few two-day outdoor hiking forays. Because we?re still recuperating from the indulgences of the Christmas holidays and are a little bit (ha, ha) out of shape, we are going to go as light as we can on the hiking camping gear. There are a few things I can skimp on but a good camping stove is not one of them. For a change we are going to try the EtaPower EF Trail Stove. This stove is the lightweight version of the original Eta Power EF stove. A net stuff sack and a lid have replaced the storage bag and frying pan. It weighs only 27 ounces and it?s about the same size as the Jetboil GCS but it is reported to boil water faster and be more fuel-efficient. They say that a 220-gram gas container (sold separately) will heat enough food for two people for at least 6 days, which will be just perfect for us. As well as the net stuff sack and lid, this EtaPower EF Trail Stove comes with a Piezo electric ignition, windscreen, burner stand, a 1.7-liter pot and handle. I am really looking forward to using this stove for the first time to make the first cup of hot chocolate on our first outdoor camping hiking adventure in the first year of this new decade. Let the games begin!

Kitchen comeback: induction cooking

Induction cooktops are nothing new. In fact, according to an article published in 2008 by CNN Money, physicist Michael Faraday discovered the scientific principle of induction in 1831. Of course, it wasn't applied to the kitchen until much later and even then, the high cost of cooktops made them prohibitive to most Americans; by 2000 they had all but disappeared from the market. They're back now and have steadily gained popularity since being reintroduced in this country in 2006.

The good news: prices for induction cooktops are dropping quickly! When we updated our cooktop report a year ago, induction cooktops cost upwards of $1,500. In our current report, the top-rated induction cooktops cost a staggering third less. At the price of about $1000, induction cooktops are only a couple hundred dollars more than the best electric cooktops. Stand-alone ranges that use induction have taken off as well, with prices comparable to a high-end electric range (and significantly lower than some professional gas or dual-fuel ranges).

Christmas 2010

It rained this year

Grandma And NaraMost years we take a "Rock" picture out on the rock in my parents back yard. This year it rained the whole weekend so a rock picture would have been rather wet. Always willing to shake things up, this year we stayed inside and used my mothers living room.

Christmas

This year we had Christmas at my mothers house. Christmas doesn't make much sense to an eight month old so we tried to keep the shock and awe to a somewhat reasonable level. Of course she loved the packaging and paper way more than what they contained. (It takes Nara a while to warm to new toys).
