A Review of Ed?s Wilderness Systems Snow Clipper Pulk

A pulk (from Finnish pulkka; Scandinavian for a low-slung sled) is used to carry supplies or transport a child over snow. In the right circumstances a pulk offers advantages over backpacking. It is an easy way to move a lot of gear; more gear than one can comfortably stash in a backpack. So if [...]

Why I love Italy: five inspiring insights from an evening with Frances Mayes

Earlier this month I had the transporting opportunity to interview Frances Mayes on stage as part of the National Geographic Traveler Conversations series in Washington, DC. I actually met Mayes in the early 1980s, when I moved to San Francisco. I had told my creative writing graduate school poet-mentor that I was moving to the Bay Area, and she told me that I should be sure to look up the poet Frances Mayes. I did and Mayes helped introduce me to the cultural riches of the city. This was years before Under the Tuscan Sun catapulted her into the kind of best-sellerdom poets can only dream of. That passionate, transformative memoir has spawned many subsequent books on Italy, including her most recent and delightful work, "Every Day in Tuscany: Seasons of an Italian Life." In our conversation, as in her books, Mayes was passionate, articulate, and electrically alive to the senses and seductions of Italy. Here are five of the many Italy-inspired insights I took away from our talk:

1) The rhythms of Italy: Poetry, Mayes said, was all she ever intended to write. But something happened after she bought and moved into Bramasole, her house in Cortona:

"I started writing longer lines and lines didn't any more want to be cut at where the line break goes in a poem. I started keeping notebooks and it just started expanding, and I found myself writing prose. I never intended to and I think that it's just mysterious that sometimes the rhythms in your brain change and your genre follows after that. It wasn't a conscious choice, but I did start writing prose because I was writing out of excitement at living there and leaning a new language, meeting people. It was very spontaneous and in fact all of my books about Italy have been written out of just spontaneity and fun."

It's fascinating to me how the rhythms of a place can infiltrate us and change the way we create, even how we move through the world. This phenomenon has certainly been true in my own life. In the hard Grecian sunlight, I'm more decisive and my writing is brighter. More vivid. More clearly etched. In France, my sentences are more languorous, more nuanced, more apt to while an hour or two away over a café crème, watching the perfumed passersby from a windowside seat at a café by the Seine. In Hawaii, I surrender myself to sun, sand, and sea. In Japan, I'm attuned to intricacies, shadows, the larger meanings of little things.

PlayStation Network hack exposes user information

On the heels of the Epsilon hack at the beginning of this month comes word that Sony's PlayStation Network, and Qriocity streaming movie and music service have suffered a significant security breach. While Sony's "slip up" might not be as massive as Epsilon's in terms of the number of customers affected, the breadth of the information breached -- including user names, passwords, email addresses, physical addresses, birth dates and more -- make it far scarier. Even worse, while it looks like the credit card information on file was at least encrypted, and Sony claims that there's no evidence that it was taken, the company adds that it can't completely rule out that possibility.

It?s A Tent ? No, It?s A Bed ? No, It?s A Playpen ? What?

I?m thinking that this is another case of ?necessity is the mother of invention?. Whoever thought of this obviously had a small child and spent family time at the beach, in the park or camping! The LittleLife Arc 3 Travel Cot is a perfect solution for traveling and spending time outdoors with your young child. It?s very sturdy and is a breeze to set up. Because of all the mesh panels it doesn?t get hot and stuffy and the soft foam mattress, with it?s removable and washable cover, is extremely comfortable. It offers a measure of shade so it?s terrific for when your child needs to nap while you?re spending a relaxing afternoon at the beach. If you throw a towel on top your little one will be totally shaded and, because of the airiness the mesh provides, it will stay cool inside. And, as it gets later in the afternoon and the mosquitoes come out, this travel cot can be used as a bug free playpen. You may even decide to set it up as a bed inside your large family tent when you go camping because, I believe you?ll find that the LittleLife Arc 3 Travel Cot will quickly become a favorite safe and cozy haven for you?re toddler to enjoy.  You know, the more I think about this handy little cot, the more uses I can imagine for it. For instance, say you?re at your older kids soccer/football/baseball game, just put some favorite toys in with your young one and ? voila ? everybody?s happy, safe and secure. Or, maybe you?re holidaying in Mexico or Hawaii or Greece (lucky you). This travel cot is so light and easy to carry it would be perfect to bring along for those lazy days on those sun drenched beaches. You may even find that you?re setting it up in the playroom at home so the kids can use it as a fort! All in all, I bet this versatile little cot will become one of your favorite accessories (if you have a small kid that is). Come have a look.

Introducing The MSR Denali Evo Ascent Snowshoe ? Bring On The Snow!

Maybe now when we are already having soft deep fluffy snow blanketing our mountain trails, we should look into buying a new set of snowshoes. Let me tell you about the MSR Denali Evo Ascent, a fantastic lightweight yet rugged snowshoe that offers extraordinary performance on icy and steep surfaces! They have strong Unideck injection-molded decks, which are tapered for a more natural walking position. They can accommodate a large boot, which makes this shoe perfect for bringing in your pack on your snowboard/skiing trip as a safety item. With the EVO Flotation Tails (sold separately), you eliminate the need for several pairs for different uses, if you are using heavy packs for instance. Recommended load without tails is 90-125 lbs and with the 6 in tails the recommended load is 125 - 175 lbs. Its crampons on either side work very well and you will enjoy superior traction through steel traction blades with their saber teeth, crampons and moulded braking bars. The bindings are easy to use, hold up very well and they can be worked on with your gloves or mitts on. Its Televator heel lifter reduces calf fatigue and therefore makes climbing more easy and efficient. These MSR Denali Evo Ascent are one of the most used snowshoes among ?die hard? snowshoers in Alaska. They say once they?re on your feet, you don?t think you have anything more than your boots on! Come see.

second trimester travel
Not far along enough for second trimester travel? Read more about pregnancy in a foreign country, Turkish prenatal care, travel in the first trimester,Turkish superstitions, and foreign baby names on Knocked up abroad.

A few years ago, before the word staycation foisted itself into the travel lexicon, babymoons were all the rage. A babymoon typically referred to the last getaway for expecting parents, often a deluxe resort vacation replete with couples' massages, room service, and lots of pampering. I've spent my my pre-baby travel slightly differently, exploring post-Soviet museums before needing a stroller, eating at restaurants that have never heard of kids' menus, and learning what non-alcoholic drinks are on offer in local dive bars. Living abroad in Istanbul has also changed my short-haul destinations considerably. In the first trimester, my husband and I traveled to Kiev and Warsaw, Russia in the dead of winter, and to Frankfurt for the Christmas markets, and I don't regret having gone without the his-and-hers massages. For second trimester travel, I found Singapore to be nearly ideal: the food and shopping are epic, the street food is safe, and the people polite and helpful. Though the hotel prices and high temperatures can be hard to deal with, the Southeast Asian city-state is a nice balance of relaxation and city exploration.

Open Question: I want to twin two sleeping bags, how should I do it?

I have a Eureka Wild Basin 0 Degree bag that has a #5 two way right zip. I am looking for a sleeping bag that is compatible to twin with. Does it have to be from the same manufacturer? Or does it just have to be the same zipper? I would prefer to order from the internet, so trying it out before buying isn't really an option. Would like some information from somebody who has already paired sleeping bags before. Thanks.

Signings & Little Flower School

I like to mix and match. It's been a bit of a recurring theme in my life. One of the (many) things I enjoyed about working on TED years ago, was helping to put together an event where, say, one minute you'd have Stefan Sagmeister speaking on happiness and design, followed by Malcolm Gladwell on the pursuit of the perfect spaghetti sauce. Flash forward a handful of years, and I don't do much in the way of events anymore, but when I do, I like for them to be inter-disciplinary, alongside people who love their work or craft. I thought that I'd share pictures from one such event today, and then let you know the details of my upcoming West coast book signings.

Little Flower School

I'm a bit slow getting this together, but last weekend I was fortunate to work (and play!) alongside a whole lot of talent. I've been a fan of Little Flower School for quite some time now. Nicolette and Sarah make stunning arrangements, and I kept hoping I'd be able to take one of their classes in Brooklyn at some point. As fate would have it, they came to California first and we put together a beautiful day of flowers, food, and new friends at June Taylor's Still-Room in Berkeley. Such a nice way to spend a drizzly Sunday.

Little Flower School

I made a few things for lunch - sparkling water spiked with June's syrups, crostini with goat cheese and yellow split peas from SNC, Green Lentil Soup with Curried Brown Butter from the new book. I made super-teensy versions of these, and also whole wheat sables studded with June's candied peel (I'll try to post that recipe soon).

Little Flower School

Now, I know a number of you feel cheated if I don't close out each post with a new recipe, and there is one! It's the lovely little soup pictured above. As I mentioned up above, it's from the new cookbook - but you'll have to hop over and visit the ladies at Remodelista for the recipe, I gave them first dibs on it - Green Lentil Soup with Curried Brown Butter. I think I tapped out the number of recipes I can post from the book, here on the site, with the PDF sampler. ;)

If you're interested in seeing more photos from the event, Remodelista has a more detailed write-up. Here's the Little Flower School post about the class. And Little Flower School on Flickr as well. Another thing worth mentioning - some people don't know that you can visit June's Still-Room & Shop in Berkeley. You absolutely can. It's a beautiful space, and always inspiring. She's open Tuesday - Friday, 11 AM - 4 PM, and on weekend class days as well.

Now, looking forward. I'm over-the-moon excited about doing a handful of book-signings next month - west coast for now. One in San Francisco. One in Berkeley. One in Portland at The Cleaners. And one in Seattle at Spare Room, with the chance of a separate afternoon signing that I'm still working on. I'm teaming up with Kim Boyce in Portland, and Lara Ferroni in Seattle. Can't. Wait. I'm hoping we'll have some other special guests & familiar faces at those signings as well. I'll post reminders as the dates get closer, but this is the jist of it. Can't wait to meet more of you in person. xo

Practicing yoga at home: Avoid these rookie mistakes

My first experience with yoga was not a great one. I?ve always been pretty athletic, so I made the classic rookie mistake of thinking I could learn everything I needed to from a yoga video. My comedy of errors did not end there. I didn?t even check to see if the video was suitable for beginners (it probably wasn?t). And despite my questionable flexibility, I was convinced that I could do anything the instructor did, such as bringing my shin practically to my nose in a particularly disastrous Krounchasana (Heron Pose). To make a long story short, my hamstring hurt for about a week, and my yoga video gathered dust until I finally gave it away.
