Open Question: Low key camping place near Bennington?

My boyfriend and I wanted to do a bit of camping this weekend before the weather got bad. I was trying to find some place not too far from Bennington Vermont but, so far, all I'm turning up are camp grounds and cabins you have to make reservations for and pay to use. We were hoping to find something a little more low key and free. Any Vermont locals know of a nice place, preferably with a swimming source, where we can just crash for a night or two without fuss?
