Beep-It optical theremin - for budget weird music

The Beep-It optical theremin produces eerie tones when exposed to various light sources

If you’ve ever heard the eerie electronic music at the beginning of a 1950s science fiction movie (The Day the Earth Stood Still, for example), then you’ve heard a theremin. Invented in Russia in the 1920s, the instrument is unique, in that the person playing it doesn’t touch it at all. Instead, they move their hands around its two antennas, causing it to emit different sounds by altering radio frequencies that the machine emits. Although still used by some modern musicians, theremins can be a little pricey, and somewhat difficult to master. That’s where the $35 Beep-It optical theremin comes in... Solar Showers Can Make Camping a More Refreshing Experience

Woman cruise ship captain in the spotlight

woman cruise ship captainBack in December of last year, Inger Klein Olsen took the helm of Cunard Line's Queen Victoria and joined a small group of women in a male-dominated occupation. Now, P&O Cruises has made history with their first woman cruise ship captain sailing to Australia at the helm of Pacific Pearl. Captain Sarah Breton joins four other female senior officers on P&O Cruises Pacific Pearl along the biggest group of female senior officers on any cruise ship in the region.

"We are thrilled to finally have a female Captain in charge of one of our great Australian ships and believe that Captain Breton is a fantastic role model for girls who dream of a career on the high seas" said Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises.

Captain Breton, 45, has served on board many ships including the former Royal Princess, Sky Princess, Canberra, Pacific Princess, Grand Princess and Star Princess as third officer, second officer, navigator, first officer and safety officer reports northernstar.com. After being promoted to staff captain in 2001 on the original Pacific Princess she went on to serve onboard Coral, Tahitian and now the new Pacific Princess.

No Bake Chocolate Cake

I don't know about you, but I didn't accomplish much today. I slept in, halfheartedly ran a few errands, accumulated flowers wherever I went, and spent a good amount of time arranging poppies & peonies into a hodgepodge of mason jars and vases. Flowers aside, I dedicated ten minutes making this chocolate cake. It's the ultimate lazy chocolate dessert. And while I think of it as a no bake chocolate cake, you wouldn't be far off if you called it a slice-able truffle. If you have a some dark chocolate, cream, and something to infuse the cream with, you're in business.

No Bake Chocolate Cake

This is the sort of thing I'll throw together if we're having friends over for dinner and I run out of steam on the dessert front. It's less trouble to make than it is to go out and buy something. A small slice goes the distance. It's intense, it's hardcore chocolate, and paired with a touch of whipped cream it's a total crowd-pleaser. I infused the cream used in the cake with espresso and allspice in this version, but you could play it straight, or take it in any direction you're inclined.

No Bake Chocolate Cake

The choice of pan warrants a mention. You end up with with ~ two cups of batter, and for the most part you can pour that into any small-ish, parchment-lined cake pan you like. The parchment is important if you ever want to get the cake out of the pan. For this cake, I used a little loaf pan I like, but I've done this in small spring-form pans, and on occasion little tart pans. Just keep in mind, a bigger pan will mean a thinner slice. A small loaf pan like this yields a deeper slice, and so on. It's hard to screw up - I mean, it's a slice-able truffle cake.

Worldwide Caution alert issued in advance of 9/11 anniversary

Worldwide cautionAmericans traveling abroad are reminded to be aware of the threat of terrorist actions and violence the U.S. State Department said this week as it urged worldwide caution and a global concern for an increased threat of terrorism as the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 draws closer.

"The Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations, and other violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas. The Department of State believes there is an enhanced potential for anti-American violence given the death of Osama Bin Laden in May 2011" the department said in a statement.

The department said U.S. citizens should be aware of potential terrorist attacks on public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure.

"Extremists have targeted and attempted attacks on subway and rail systems, aviation, and maritime services. In the past several years, these types of attacks have occurred in cities such as Moscow, London, Madrid, Glasgow, and New York City."

Because of the protests that have swept across northern Africa and the Middle East since spring, the State Department warned U.S. citizens in those regions to be alert for the potential for violence and avoid areas of demonstrations if possible.

Open Question: How much gas will I use in a weeks camping trip?

Going on a camping trip for a week with some friends, there's going to be 7 of us that have a fry up pretty much every morning. I've bought 2 Hi Gear single burner stoves and also 12x 220g Butane cartridges (as they were on offer), but I don't know how many we will use and I don't want to take more than necessary as we're travelling by train and are tight for bag space.
Unfortunately we don't have room for a large gas bottle, and they are so expensive over here! Also, the campsite does not allow open fires for health and safety reasons.

Chinese scientists have developed an aquatic microrobot that mimics the water-walking abilities of the Gerridae - a family of long-legged bugs commonly known as water striders that are able to run on top of the water's surface. The scientists say their bionic microbot incorporates improvements over previous devices that make it an ideal candidate for military spy missions, water pollution monitoring and other applications. .. Birth of the TransPanama Trail

Every long hiking trail begins with one person's dream, followed by the ceaseless labor of a small group of volunteers. To become reality, that small group must grow into an army of volunteers. It sounds impossible, but it has been done. The Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail are two examples in the USA. You can hike the Coast to Coast Trail across England, and the Trans Canada Trail is in the works, spanning the width of Canada.

The vision and the labor of building a long trail are well underway in the small Central American country of Panama. A small team of volunteers is dreaming of building a trail from Columbia in the east, lengthwise to Costa Rica in the west ? the TransPanama Trail.

The western half opened to hikers in June 2009. It spans mountainous regions with gorgeous scenery. Maps and photos can be found at www.transpanama.org.

Now, to begin mapping the eastern half, Rick Morales has set out on the first ever TransPanama Trail thru-hike, beginning at the Columbia border. Others will join him for sections. Rick left from the Colombian border on June 26 and plans to take 3 months to hike the 800 KM to Costa Rica. His journey is being documented on the blog: http://teamtranspanama.blogspot.com. A digitized SPOT track of the journey is at http://www.transpanama.org/en/envivo.

A branch of the TransPanama Trail will leave Panama City in the center of the country and veer toward the Caribbean Sea, following the Camino Real, a route developed in the 1400s by the Spanish to carry their pillaged gold and silver across to their galley ships. But, that's an endeavor for the future. Right now, Rick and the other volunteers are focusing on the lengthwise route.

Of course, as with any trail building endeavor, the Panamanians have to deal with land rights issues. It's never an easy or quick process. In Panama there are regions that are populated by indigenous tribes such as the Kuna and Embera. Part of the lure of hiking the TransPanama Trail will be the cultural experience of hiking through indigenous communities. In return, low impact tourism will help these communities remain self-sustaining.

Other allures will be the varied scenery, including views to the Pacific Ocean, plentiful crystal clear streams and waterfalls, and hiking through the tropics with its unique vegetation and animals.

As the first thru-hiker, Rick Morales is a true pioneer in the spirit of people such as Earl Shaffer (AT) and Eric Ryback (PCT). He is building a legacy that those of us who enjoy long-distance hiking will benefit from in years to come.

Oatmeal Muffins

These muffins are a good-bye kiss from my workhorse of an oven. The last hurrah. Although, not much to look at, I have a lot to thank it for. We've survived two cookbooks together, a thousand meals, and unlike some other stoves I've lived with - this one was easy-going, not particularly temperamental. I'll miss it. I'm going to miss all sorts of things about this apartment, but now's not the time to get sentimental on you. There are more boxes to pack. The muffins? They're crazy-good-substantial-notlikecake. Crumble-topped with an oatmeal and yogurt base. They're a bit custard-y when hot, and not-at-all when cooled. Craggy, golden-topped - the perfect send-off.

Oatmeal Muffins

I couldn't resist putting a crumble on these, the same one from the Tutti-Frutti Crumble in Super Natural Every Day. The muffins themselves don't come across as particularly sweet, but you get a nice amount of sweetness from the topping. Overall, I would say, the muffins might classify as lightly-sweetened, which is what I like. That said, you could add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup to the wet ingredients if you think you might want a slightly sweeter punch to these. Or stir in some sweet fruit.

I kept these pretty straight forward - rolled oats, yogurt, etc. You could take them in a thousand directions with different spice combination, or citrus zest, or add-ins like seeds, or berries, or dried fruit. The most important thing though is this - pop them out of the pan as soon as you can after baking. Let them cool outside the pan on a baking rack. In the pan they steam, and it will impact the texture of the muffins. And not in a good way...

I hope you like them. And hopefully, the next time I post it'll be from a new address! Thanks for all your nice notes regarding the move. I can't believe how many of you are in the middle of the same thing. Hope you're having as much fun as I am ;) Oh - and a quick update. Books from the new shipments of Super Natural Every Day will be available any time now - fingers crossed. A bunch of places are sold out (thank you!!!), but that should be remedied soon. I'll give you all the heads up when it is back in stock. -h
