Resolved Question: Anything as good as Keen's Targhee II for less money?

Or something better for the same money (less than $130) My requirements: Comfortable enough to wear everyday and can be used for hiking, biking, walking, yard work, etc. Waterproof and mid high.
I really like the Targhee 2, but it seems to wear too quickly for the money.

Brand Finland, Finnair, and Blue Wings

brand finland

Finland is widely recognized for having an amazing brand, which draws substance from several sources: its educational system, its technological strengths, its tradition of modern design and architecture, its physical environment (forests, water, and the extreme north), and distinctive cultural experiences like sauna.

In light of Finland's high performance across several broad categories of evaluation (education and income, among others) it's perhaps no huge leap of logic that the country would also operate a strong national brand, though clearly there are many powerful and exciting countries that don't have well considered or promoted national brands.

The Finnish brand centers on clarity, transparency, innovation, and direct communication. There is also a strongly physical element of the brand, which references the actual territory of the country, making sure that the essentially unruly, wild nature of the land itself is not ignored.

It's fair to say that the brand is pretty successful. Helsinki pops up on all sorts of most-livable cities lists in part for its strong infrastructure and facilities but also in part because there is an unyielding buzz about Finland.

Also very helpful for the promotion of the brand is Finnair itself, an airline viewed as strongly innovative for capturing lucrative Northern Europe-Asia air routes. (Currently, Finnair flies to 11 destinations in Asia; they'll add their 12th, to Chongqing, in May.)

Finnair's Blue Wings in-flight magazine lines up with Finland's national brand in some very obvious ways. There is a directness to its graphics. A detailed diagram of Helsinki's Vantaa Airport, for example, is easily the most helpful example of its type I've ever seen.

There's also a Finland in Figures page with a ton of information organized in a very straightforward, simple manner: export and import figures; population; area; government details; economic structure; monthly temperatures and precipitation figures for Helsinki, a comparative GDP table, and some notes on working life. There's also a column by Alexander Stubb, a Finnish politician who has served as Foreign Minister. Throughout, there are stories on things that dovetail with the Brand Finland: design, nature, technology, and organic restaurants.

It's a satisfying read and it's also a reminder of how badly so many in-flight magazines miss the boat. A lack of a sense of direction and haphazardly outsourced editorial does not produce a compelling in-flight magazine. Self-awareness, focus, and innovative articles do.

Open Question: What setup do you use when camping with Directv HD?

Ok RV'ers. I am ready to get out of the stone age, and bring my HD receiver on our next camping trip. We have used Directv for the last 10+ years when camping, but never HD. I have been on the forums, and called Directv, but it seems nobody can give me the answers. I have the SWM system in my home, but was hoping that I would still be able to take my HD receiver camping. I have a slimline-5 dish that I picked up on craigslist. Will this work? If so, do I need any filters? What satellites are the HD channels currently on? I know Directv has been changing things. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Partial solar eclipse highlights the 2011 Antarctic travel season

An Antarctic solar eclipse will take place on November 25thA visit to Antarctica is high on the list of "must see" places for travelers looking to get off the beaten path. It is the highest, coldest, driest continent on the planet, and yet it still holds an undeniable allure for many adventure seekers. They come to kayak amongst the massive ice flows, visit penguin colonies, and to step foot in a place that few people ever get to see. This year, a few lucky visitors will also get the opportunity to witness a solar eclipse.

On November 25th, a partial solar eclipse will take place in the southernmost regions of the planet, making it only visible in New Zealand and the Antarctic. While the kiwis will have just 20% of the sun obscured from view, the Antarctic Peninsula will see nearly 90% of our star blocked from sight as the moon passes in front of it. Anyone traveling through the region on that day is sure to have a once in a lifetime experience.

Adventure travel specialists Quark Expeditions is not only preparing for the impending Antarctic cruise season, which begins in November, they're currently offering a 15% discounts on all of their cruises scheduled to take place during the eclipse. The company has two different itineraries available and four separate cruises that will be in the Antarctic when the celestial event takes place.

It isn't often that you know that a travel experience is going to be truly unique and special before you even go. But I'd say witnessing a solar eclipse over the Antarctic Peninsula ranks as an unforgettable sight.

Vice produces guide to Congo

It wouldn't surprise me if Suroosh Avi ends up dead at the end of this series. A host and founder of the well respected Vice TV, Mr Avi recently made his way to The Democratic Republic of Congo -- specifically, the conflict-ridden East Congo -- to document the mineral trade currently pummeling the country.

Rich in a whole host of minerals that the rest of the world needs, regions of East Congo have been violently contested, with political, big business and humanitarian efforts pulling in all directions. The result is a country still entrenched in the past, with many workers surviving on scraps and widespread poverty

Vice begins their outstanding series in the segment above. The remainder of the series can be found on their site.
