James

My Sister adds a second...

28 Days Old (4 Weeks!)

Tiny Little Finger In Blue Sweater
It's amazing how much babies change in the first few weeks. James is already up to 10 pounds and has developed a very large bald spot on the front of his head. He still mostly sleeps, but there are brief periods of awake where he is looking around a little.

I find it difficult to image splitting time between two children, but I'm sure you figure out a way to make it work. We went out for a nice stroll around the neighborhood - the Williams household now has a double stroller (bassonet + upright) as well as an agressive single stoller. All three kids had a good time on their walk.

And a bit of video. James and Marcus are almost two years apart. Can you spot the differences?

Thanks again for the visit!

15 Days Old - Our First Visit with James

We wanted to come over sooner, but our daughter was sick and it's not very nice to bring a sick kid over to another house where there is a new Baby. James Philip Vincent Williams was born on Sunday Feb. 13th. Marcus couldn't be happier!

Coolest Big BrotherLittle Smile Marcus

Marcus was running around and kind of scared us with how much further we need to go with child proofing our own home. James on the other hand was a surprise - mostly asleep and so light! It's amazing how light a newborn baby is compared to 10 month old.

A little bit of sunlight and James woke up for a little bit of a visit. He's still in the mostly sleep stage so there wasn't a lot of awake and interacting.

Time to update the family portraits! Mom is doing really well after having the baby and Marcus is reacting well to a younger sibling.

Diana And JamesJames And Marcus
I was really impressed with how well Jeff and Diana could conceal there exhaustion. Just the idea of a second baby makes me want to take a nap.

The Williams Family

Thanks for the visit! Welcome to the family James!

Open Question: Which backpacking tent to purchase?

I'm looking for a good all-round backpacking tent for 3-4 people, me (14 yrs. old), my 11 yr old brother, the occasional friend, and possibly later on my 8 yr. old brother.

Weight isn't to much of a big deal, as I'd prefer durability to weight, and to a lesser extent space. I'd prefer a 4 season tent if it is suitable for summer use. Also I'd like a double-walled tent, with closable windows (mesh). The reason for closable windows is that I want to be able to control the air flow. If a tent without closable windows would stay warm enough I would consider it, though always having a breeze based on the wind would be an annoyance.

Some brands I've looked at are Hilleberg, North Face, Stephenson (Warmlite), Black Diamond, among many others. This tent needs to last me a long time, as I'm not going to get a second tent anytime soon. Money isn't really an issue, as there are plenty of bargains I can find out there. The tent will be used in the little Rocky Mts., Montana.

Thank you for your time.

A London designer has created a sweating robotic armpit, intended to make it easier for hu...

When we think of robots, we tend to think of clean, antiseptic automatons that don’t suffer from yucky things like halitosis, flatulence or body odor ... unlike us humans. According to London designer Kevin Grennan, however, this difference alienates us from robots, and will keep us from ever fully accepting them as anything other than machines. His solution? Robots that secret human odors, in situations in which people would secrete those odors. While some of his odor-secreting devices are purely conceptual, he has produced a working model of at least one – a sweating robotic armpit... Green Pea Soup

I held off writing about this until I was fairly confident it was a sure thing. And now that I'm sitting here amongst towers of boxes, I think it is safe to say...we're moving. Just up the street though! Nothing too dramatic. But yeah, it's a move. And let me tell you, I don't love moving. I've been happy to avoid doing it for seven? eight? years. But the prospect of a proper guest room, a bit more space to work, and extra, extra tall ceilings - all just a hop and skip from where we currently live (and love) - was too much to pass up. So, in addition to wrapping Champagne flutes one by one - and boxing up tights, toothbrushes, and tart pans - cleaning out the freezer was on my hit list. And that's where today's pea soup comes into play.

Pea Soup Recipe

I wish I could tell you I made today's pea soup with fresh spring peas. I didn't. It was made with peas found in the back left-hand corner of my freezer. And, even so, it was good. I'm sure it would be exponentially good with fresh market peas. Here's how it works. You make an Indian-inspired garlic ginger paste, then use it as the base of the soup along with some onion. There's also some green chiles in there to contribute some kick, along with a couple other spices. The ingredient list is based on one from this book, but I went off-road beyond that, and turned it into a one-pot soup.

Pea Soup Recipe

There are many things coming with me in the move. And many things that aren't :). I thought I'd share some pics of a few things I've come across that have made the cut. Up top, I love this antique cookie press that I purchased a while back at Heritage in Napa. And below that are some snapshots of my family, and my grandma's copy of The Joy of Cooking.

Pea Soup Recipe

And Heather, this is a note for you - those little spoons up above were Metne's. It's hard to see, but they all have M, for Metlar, on them. I think they must have been part of her wedding silver? I wonder if mom is hiding the rest of the M's somewhere? And then below those are some H's and a small menagerie of cookie cutters.

I'm looking forward to doing some shooting in the new apartment soon - the light there is stunning - although it will be the first time I'll be shooting from a place where I suspect the morning light will trump late afternoon. Fingers crossed.

Shooting movies and television shows using digital SLR (DSLR) cameras that also record high definition video is becoming much more widespread - in fact, the Season 6 finale of House was shot using Canon's EOS 5D Mark II camera, and Philip Bloom is said to have shot a number of scenes for the upcoming Lucasfilm World War II film Red Tails using the very same model. If you're looking to make your own DSLR epic, then you'll want to keep things steady while chasing someone down the stairs or running after your star through a busy city street. The Mount Kestrel Duopod concept from designer Ben Millett is a solid-looking shoulder-mounted steadicam rig that can also double as a floor-standing, two-legged camera platform... Solar charging at GE with a Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid

It's like a regular Prius, only better. That, in a nutshell, sums up the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid (aka Prius PHV). The example Toyota loaned us for a week is a prototype--the production version arrives next year and joins the growing Prius lineup. We requested the car because we were invited to the GE Energy headquarters in Plainville, CT for the opening of its new solar carport for EV charging. Since GE employees and visitors to the office would now have the ability to recharge electric vehicles during the day, we figured we might as well drive up in a car that could take advantage of the facility, too.
