The Eastern Upper Peninsula: Triple Crown For Perch

Come February, and lasting through the last ice of April, the perch fishing just gets better and better. In the eastern U.P. there are three places, all close together, where the perch fishing can simply be the best.

Remains of forgotten genocide victims returned by Berlin museum

genocide, Herero genocide, NamibiaIt's the genocide most people have forgotten, a ruthless extermination of men, women, and children while an uncaring world focused on other things.

From 1904 to 1908, German colonial rulers in what is now Namibia systematically exterminated the Herero and Nama people. They had rebelled against the colonizers and the German army quickly defeated them. Not satisfied with a only a military victory, the Germans pushed both tribes into the desert, where they starved and died of thirst. Nobody knows how many perished but it may have been as many as 100,000.

A grim relic of this genocide are twenty Herero and Nama skulls kept in the Berlin Medical Historical Museum. One skull is from a three-year-old boy. Originally they had been preserved with the skin and hair intact and used for "studies" to prove the superiority of the white race.

This week the skulls were returned to tribal leaders after an apology and a ceremony. This is the latest in a series of repatriations of human remains to native peoples from museums. Many nations, the United States included, have passed laws requiring human remains to be returned. Identification and legal technicalities slow down the process, however. Berlin collections still include about 7,000 skulls. Then there's the question of shrunken heads, which were often sold by tribal peoples to collectors, and of very ancient remains that cannot be traced to an existing tribe.

We forget genocides at our peril. Hitler felt he could get away with the Holocaust because nobody cared about the genocide of the Herero and Nama, or the genocide of the Armenians during World War One. Even many of the Holocaust's victims are forgotten. While everyone knows six million Jews died, many are unaware of the millions of Slavs, Gypsies, political activists, homosexuals, Born-Again Christians, and disabled who were also killed.

Herb Cream Cheese Scrambled Eggs

I would like to think that August is going to disappear into a happy blur of friends, and meals, and walks around San Francisco. We're smack in the middle of a parade of house guests, and it's pretty great. One of my best friends from high school visited first - all the way from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Then, a few days later, this amazing lady dropped into San Francisco to sell her beautiful letterpress stationary. I connected with Lynn a couple years back (through her site) - I loved her clean, understated designs, and I found her writing about her work (and adventures with this little guy) inspiring.

Herb Cream Cheese Scrambled Eggs

We did a bunch of stuff while she was here. And(!) her visit happened to coincide with the Alameda Flea market. So, we crossed the bridge (not long after sunrise) last Sunday morning, to beat the crowds. Conversations so early in the morning are always a bit hazy in my memory, but I know we talked about lots of things, including eggs. A subject, it turns out, we have similar opinions on. For example - poached eggs are good, but jiggly whites are just gross. Lynn mentioned she does a scramble where she adds a couple dollops of special, super-herby cream cheese to finish the eggs. Now, this was an idea that had never occurred to me. In fact, I can't actually remember the last time I bought cream cheese. They sounded incredible - the sort of thing I think of as simple-special - simple technique with a special twist. Lynn was a good sport, and let me shoot her while she showed me the ropes. Here's how you make them...

Herb Cream Cheese Scrambled Eggs

One thing before we get to the recipe - you're going have plenty of leftover cream cheese, and it'll last a good week or so in your refrigerator. Other ways you can use it - slathered on toast and crackers. Lynn suggested layering it throughout a breakfast strata, or adding dollops to the top of a frittata. You can toss some into a bowl of hot pasta along with some chopped spinach. Or top a bowl of roasted tomato soup with a dollop. Or smeared on one of these quesadillas? You get the idea - it's great on/in/over a whole host of things.

Thanks for being a most excellent houseguest Lynn - come back soon :)! xoxo

Virginia's Natural Ways to Enjoy the Fall Foliage

From the Blue Ridge Mountains to dense piedmont forests to the tranquil coastal waters of the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia is the ideal place for people looking to step away from the stress of everyday life and relax and reconnect with loved ones and nature this fall. Virginia's topography welcomes all types of outdoor recreation - from camping to hiking to water sports to mountain climbing. To help nature lovers truly connect with Virginia's great outdoors this fall, here are a few active ways to enjoy fall foliage.

Fall is a great time to camp in Virginia as mild temperatures make for great quality time making s'mores and telling stories by the camp fire. Two of Virginia's outdoor treasures are celebrating their 75thanniversaries this year, and both offer ideal setups for camping.

Virginia State Parks offer perfect places to pitch a tent or "rough it? indoors at a cabin. Voted "America's Best,? Virginia parks offer comfortable cabins, campsites and primitive backcountry spots for the rugged adventurer. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor recreation, including hiking and biking trails, lakes and waterways as well as a full menu of programs and classes. To celebrate their 75th anniversary this year Virginia State Parks have special events scheduled across the state.

Shenandoah National Park is a Virginia treasure all year, but fall is especially spectacular in the Park. With 75 overlooks along the105-mile Skyline Drive there is a breathtaking vista around every corner. The Park's 200,000 protected acres offer a variety of activities including guided hikes, rock climbing and rappelling and horseback riding. There are also National Park Service programs, events and entertainment. Camping is permitted in the backcountry or at one of the Park's four campgrounds. For those who prefer something less rustic there are also cabins and lodge facilities at Skyland Resort and Big Meadows Lodge. For its 75th anniversary, Shenandoah National Park is celebrating with special events, travel packages, deals, discounts and a scavenger hunt game that offers visitors a fun way to learn about the Park and the surrounding communities. Participants who answer all the questions correctly are eligible to win great prizes.

Take a Hike!
Virginia is a hiker's paradise, especially in the fall when temperatures are milder and the foliage is in color all around. From the Appalachian Trail to Shenandoah National Park to lesser-known trails in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests and scenic State Parks, Virginia has a footpath for everyone. The Appalachian Trail(AT) is an epic 2,175-mile long public footpath along the East Coast and Virginia is home to 544 miles of the AT - more miles than any other state.

Shenandoah National Park's nearly 500 miles of hiking trails offer places for trekkers to encounter gorgeous waterfalls, panoramic vistas and wildlife. Some popular hikes include the Overall Run Falls, Old Rag and Stony Man. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in Southwest Virginia is an outdoor mecca with 115,000 acres of mountain recreation including hiking trails, lakes, streams, historic sites and wildlife viewing. Put on hiking shoes and climb atop Mt. Rogers for a bird's eye view from the highest point in Virginia at 5,729 feet.

Biking for Leaf Peepers
From rugged mountainous terrain to calm coastal flatlands, Virginia has no shortage of cycling options with amazing scenery. Virginia has 838 miles of the U.S. Bicycle Route System ? more than any other state ? and Bicycle Routes 76 and 1 cross the state from east to west and north to south. Virginia's rails-to-trails routes are perfect for scenic, peaceful pedaling as they are former railroad grades that have been converted into multi-use recreation trails. The Virginia Creeper Trail in southwest Virginia, the James River Heritage Trail in central Virginia are just a few of these scenic trails. Virginia also has some of the best mountain biking trails in the country. From to challenging 3,000 feet climb on the 32-mile Southern Traverse ride near Harrisonburg to the trails in downtown Richmond at the James River Park System Loop, bikers can enjoy foliage and riverside views next to urban cityscapes.

Paddle through the Foliage
Water lovers can't go wrong in Virginia as paddling options are seemingly endless on a vast variety of idyllic rivers, small streams, tidal bays, quiet inlets and mountain lakes. Smith Mountain Lake stretches over 200,000 acres with a 500 mile shoreline and is nestled in the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains which makes for a beautiful scene in the fall. The lake is also known for outstanding fishing - particularly citation size striped bass. Virginia's Seaside Water Trail is a 100-mile-long series of day-use paddling routes running between the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge at Cape Charles and Chincoteague Island. Additional trail segments go through Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and connect to Assateague National Seashore and the Assateague Canoe Trail.

Lake Drummond is a 3,100-acre lake located in the center of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge that offers a unique choice for paddling enthusiasts. With shallow waters stained amber with tannic acid, the lake is a thing of beauty as the reflections of extraordinary cypress trees and clouds appear so clearly in the water

Get Your Blood Pumping on a Fall Whitewater Adventure
Experience the wet and wild ride of the Russell Fork at Breaks Interstate Park- the "Grand Canyon of the South.? Russell Fork is limited to weekends during the first four full weekends in October, when water is released from the John Flannagan Dam and Reservoir. It's an intense class V+ roller coaster of big drops, including the infamous El Horrendo, one wild 75-foot stretch that is considered one of the most difficult in the East. After the exhilaration of this whitewater adventure, take time to relax and explore Breaks Interstate Park, where the beauty of unspoiled wilderness is all around.

Add Excitement to Fall Outdoor Activities on a Geocaching Treasure Hunt
Geocaching employs the use of a GPS device to find a hidden container filled with a logbook, pencil and sometimes larger caches containing maps, books, toys and money. After finding the cache, geocachers write their name and the date in the logbook. Usually cache hunters will report their individual cache experiences on the Internet.

What does organic really mean?

This September the Organic Trade Association (OTA) is celebrating National Organic Harvest Month. The OTA's annual fete means a slew of enviro-themed events, but don't fret if you're still not sure what all the fuss is about. Organic is hardly a new thing, though that doesn't mean we've all figured exactly what it entails.

Open Question: Looking for a pot that is flexible for camping/survival?

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a pot (with lid) that will hopefully take care of all my cooking needs in a camping/survival situation. I would need like the pot to meet the certain criteria:

- Be able to cook over open flames, on conventional stovetops, on coal, etc.
- I want it to be able to cook everything: boil water quickly, bake beans, cook/grill meat, heat up sauces, cook eggs, and all that good stuff.
- Be efficient. I don't want it to take forever to heat up the pot and waste a ton of fuel/resources.
- Around 1 to 2 liter capacity.
- Not too heavy to carry around.

I'm thinking dutch ovens? But I'm afraid they might be too heavy. Or should I just stick with a conventional stainless steel pot?

Help appreciated!
Also, I'd like to add that I want the pot to be DURABLE. I don't want to have to keep replacing worn out pots.

I'm from Illinois and me plus 8 other friends wanted to go camping for one night. The only thing is most campsites in illinois only allow 4 people per site and we all wanted to stay together. We tried to do group camping but you need to be a part of a youth group and were not doing that. were all 18 and older so were old enough to camp with an "adult" present. does anyone know where we can find a campsite in illinois that allows a group of nine people? Nara Discovers Her Feet

Smiling On Green Blanket On CouchKids are funny. They really don't see the world the same way we do. Obviously they don't have the cultural references or language yet, but they haven't really figured out everything about their bodies. One day Nara found her feet.

Finger Between Toes

We usually dressed her in footed sleepers so naked feet were only available at changing time. That mean that every time we changed her, her feet went in her mouth. Those little hands aren't that coordinated either so there are a number of misses, but she is obviously happy when it all comes together.

Thanksgiving On the Island

Knitted Hat On SideWhen you have a baby, it's important that you don't let the details of life chain you to your house and habit. Going to the Island (when it was just Helen and I) used to be an easy affair - we both pack some clothes and basically go. When you mix in a Baby, it becomes a car filling affair. Even with the effort, it's important to get out and visit people.

Family At Thanksgiving

We had brunch at the Kingfisher - the local spa/resort. It's an amazing spread so I'm always amazed that people agree to have their photos taken afterwards.
